Overview

Chronic cholestasis is a symptom resulting from several conditions in which the flow or formation of bile (a digestive fluid that aids in the digestion of fats) is impaired. This results in accumulation of bile salts, pigments and fats (lipids) in the blood stream instead of elimination through the digestive tract. The main organs affected are the liver and intestines; secondary effects can occur in any organ system.

Patients with chronic cholestasis cannot absorb fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin E. Vitamin E deficiency is a complication often seen in patients with this condition.
